Welcome

Can you believe a new school year has begun?!?! I can't! And now you are in high school! I know this time is exciting and maybe even a bit scary, but I am anxious and confident we are going to have a successful and productive school year.

I have created this blog to serve as a form of communication from me to you, but also for you to use to post things to your classmates. I will be posting regularly and therefore some topics I will expect you to comment for a grade, and other topics will be posted purely for your enjoyment :)

So how will this work? In class or through e-mail I will tell you when to check out our blog. If I tell you a comment is necessary then you will need to post your comment and sign your first and last name at the end so I can give you credit for the assignment. If you have anything you want me to post email me at nrubinet@gmail.com. This could be almost anything. Maybe you want to remind your classmates about an event after school or maybe you just want your classmates to read something you have written and want our feedback. I will post your topic either with your name by it or anonymously. Let’s make it a great year!

  1. NON-FICTION ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS

    1. Title of Nonfiction Read: Israel Shells Syria After Golan Heights Mortar
    Written By:Ariel Schalit/Josef Federman Publication Date: 11/12/12

    2. The only word I had a problem with was the word "billowed" because quite frankly, I wasn't very familiar with that word at all. What I did to help me find the meaning of "billowed" was to simple google it on the internet.

    3. Factual Summary: Israeli tanks struck a Syrian artillery launcher Monday after a stray mortar shell flew into Israeli-held territory for the second day.

    4. Interpretation: The main point that the author wanted to get across was that there could potentially be a war between the countries of Syria and Israel.

    5. Personal Response: What I think about this article is that it really isn't surprising how two middle-eastern countries are going through a fracas.

    2. None.

    3. Factual Summary: Residents in more than a dozen states across the country have filed secession petitions to the Obama administration program.

    4. Interpretation: The main point of the article was to show that some people want to revoke Obama from presidency.

    5. Personal Response: What I think about the article is that it is not a surprise to me at all that people don't like Obama. There will always be haters.

Obama Is Pressed on Petraeus and Holds Line on Taxes
    Written By:Helene Cooper
    Publication Date: Novemember 14,2012

    2. Avert -To turn away,i looked the word up on google and clicked on a dictionary link

    3. Obama held a press conference discussing tax cuts and raising taxes. He was pointing out that the Bush era extensions needs to stop. Which was on extending taxes for the middles class and cutting taxes for the wealthy. Obama says he believes it should be the other way around. If the wealthy people taxes are cut America will lose more money which would not help with the unemployment issue.

    4. Interpretation:I think the main reason the author wants people to read her work is to show people what Obama is trying to do now that he is re-elected as president, and what we should be expecting.

    5. Personal Response:I think the piece is good and very detailed. I think that Obama has good plans ahead for America

  4. 1.Title of Nonfiction Read- Want to Legalize Marijuana? Get Wall Street Behind It. Written by- Whet Moser Publication date: november 14 2012

    2. Venerable- commanding respect because of great age or impressive dignity; worthy of veneration or reverence, as because of high office or noble character.

    3. This article is stating that in Chicago they are protesting for the legalization for marijuana. they use the topic of when 40,000 marchers marched for the legalization of beer and that marijuana is no worse then beer. and the march led by a successful man edward hopkinson a man of amusingly blue blood, and whose great-great-great-grandfather was a close friend of Benjamin Franklin, whose great-great-grandfather signed the Declaration of Independence, whose great-grandfather wrote Hail, Columbia, and whose grandfather lived to be the oldest graduate of the University of Pennsylvania."

    4. Interpretation: i think that the main reason is why not legalize weed a lot of people do it and it'll give the country a lot of money. and that even "good" people used drugs and alcohol. Marijuana will only benefit the country.

    5. Personal response: i think that Whet Moser has a point a whole bunch of people all over the country smoke this drug why not legalize it and benefit the country, of corse with a age limit, like they just previously legalized weed in Seattle if your older than 21
